Leicestershire Aero Club - Vintage Aircraft Club Classic Homebuilt Fly-In 2011

Location: Leicester

This year's Classic Homebuilt Fly-In at the Leicestershire Aero Club was co-hosted with the Vintage Aircraft Club. For once the day was very hot, with almost unlimited visibility and a sun that could burn the unwary.
The Fly-In attracted about 36 visitors as well as a fair collection of interesting locals who were taking advantage of the excellent weather. The aim was to encourage traditional plans built homebuilts to a dedicated event and whilst numbers were a little disappointing we had the Currie Wot G-ASBA and Dave Hunter's Taylor Monoplane which won a best homebuilt award at the PFA Rally over 30 years ago.
This year we had a Monnet Sonerai 2L a type that has slowly faded from view at Fly Ins in recent years. G-BOBY was roaded in by Robert Hallam and was equipped with a four cylinder Jabiru 2200. We believe that it has not flown yet with this engine but with the Jabiru it might give the type a reasonable performance with two people which they never did with the VW conversion.
A design that has its own small following is the Minicab championed in the UK by Arthur Ord-Hume who produced drawings (still available) for the more powerful C-90 powered version. This modification originated with Jean Barritault whose original aircraft is now in the UK as G-ATPV. The visitor to Leicester was amateur built example built by Derek Burden who also converted the engine a Continental PC60 ground power unit which produces about 90 h.p.
